Dr. Naoko Ishii

Dr. Naoko Ishii is the founding director of the Center for Global Commons (CGC) at the University of Tokyo. CGC aims to catalyse systems change for sustainable development within planetary boundaries.

Before joining the University of Tokyo, she was CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) from 2012 to 2020, developing the GEF2020 strategy focused on transforming key economic systems. Her earlier roles include Deputy Vice Minister of Finance in Japan’s Ministry of Finance, World Bank country director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and IMF economist for Kenya, Uganda, and Kyrgyz Republic.

Dr. Ishii is a distinguished alumna of the University of Tokyo, holding a PhD in International Studies and has authored several books, two of which have received academic awards.
